Advocacy, Not Just Activities (January 22, 2016)

Did you know that long before PTAs became known for fundraising and after school enrichment programs, they raised awareness for and championed many laws that became part of your child's standard education and treatment today?

Over the last 100 plus years, the National PTA along with all of its State and Local membership organizations have been responsible for introducing Kindergarten classes to the public school system, pushing the passage of child labor laws and implementing the hot lunch program.  If not for the work of PTA members, children would still be tried as adults in criminal cases, art would never have been introduced into curriculums and school and automobile safety standards would have been kept on the back burner.  Today, we still need to fight and advocate for the wellbeing and education of our children.

One important way YOU can help advocate for your child and the youth of our state is through the Washington State PTA's annual Focus Day in Olympia. Join thousands of other parents and educators across the state to meet with State Legislators and share with them that education is a top priority for their constituents.  Focus Day is On February 3rd at the Capital Building in Olympia, WA from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Younger children are welcome to attend this event with their parents!  If you are interested in joining other Wellington Parents on this trip to Olympia to let our voices be heard for our kids, please contact our Wellington PTA Advocacy Chair, Heather Jenks.

Let's Speak Up for Our Kids! (November 8, 2015)

The next Washington State Legislative Session is coming up in just two months!

Our Legislature is STILL in contempt of court for not fully funding education in our state. Numbers talk in Olympia and we need more parents voicing their concerns for their children's future education. Believe it or not, a simple email to your legislators WILL make a difference. With so many competing legislative agendas, they need to see that parents are willing to take the time to reach out and demand that their child's constitutional right to an amply funded education is not being denied.

Here is what you can do

Below are the email addresses to your representative. Send an email to each of your House Representatives and Senator. Include in the subject line "Please fully fund education in Washington State!" In the email message box you need to include your name and residential address so that they know you are one of their constituents that cares. You don't even have to write anything further than that in the message box, however a personal testimony on why education is important to you or how our schools are being adversely affected by a lack of funding is always good.

Representatives for District 45 (Woodinville, Duvall, and bordering parts of Redmond and Kirkland):

Representatives for District 1 (Bothell, Echo Lake, Maltby area)
